Astronauts Will Turn Trash Into Tools
Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be able to turn their used forks and knives into tools and satellite parts.
Tethers Unlimited Inc., an aerospace technology company, has developed a system that combines a waste recycling machine with a 3D printer.
Astronauts will put waste items made of plastic into the recycling machine, called the Positrusion Recycler. When they press a button, the Recycler will sterilize and melt down the plastic and turn it into 3D filament. (In this case, filament means a type of plastic thread used in 3D printers.)
The filament will be used in a 3D printer on the ISS – called the Refabricator – to make tools, spare parts and satellite components.
The waste will come from packaging materials, food containers, trays and eating utensils used on the ISS. Astronauts currently use disposable wet wipes to clean their food containers and utensils. The used wipes are stored as trash, and replacement wipes must be sent up to the ISS on cargo missions.
By recycling old food containers and utensils, astronauts will reduce the amount of trash they produce. (To get rid of trash from the ISS, astronauts load it into empty cargo capsules and release it into space. The capsules burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere.)
Turning trash into useful new items will also help NASA save money because astronauts will need fewer supplies. It costs about $6,000 for every kilogram launched into orbit.
These benefits will be even more important for longer missions in the future – such as the two-year journey to Mars. Astronauts will be able to recycle old waste materials into new tools and parts as they need them.
Tethers has successfully tested the system in its laboratory. They will test it on the ISS in early 2017. The company is also developing a version of the system for use here on Earth.

Social Studies: Pioneer Survival Kit Lesson
Students will play a game called “Blind Man’s Bluff”. They will realize when they are blind folded it is hard to identify where they are and who is right in front of them. The game starts with a scenario of a pioneer child’s candle burning out. There are no streetlights or flashlights and the child has to use touch to recognize where he/she is going. The students will then complete a worksheet called survival kit. The students will find tools and resources around the room; the students can only pick 5 items to place in their bag. The students will choose an item and write why they picked this tool and how it will be useful for them in pioneer time. The students will come back to the carpet and share their tools and resources found in their survival kit, explaining their choice and how they plan on using it to survive.
Language: Predicting The Funky Smell at Chris Hadfield
The Funky Smell at Chris Hadfield
It was a typical day at Chris Hadfield Public School. The wind was cold and the clouds covered the sky. Sophia held the door for everyone to enter into the portable. As everyone undressed out of their winter gear, Artyom yelled out “Yuck! Did you smell that!” and then everybody started sniffing the air. All of sudden, principal Alban burst through the door! “Ms. Collis can I please talk to you outside?” Ms. Collis walked quickly to the door and went outside with principal Alban.
What do you predict the principal is telling Ms. Collis?
Ms. Collis entered the classroom and announced, “for the remaining of the period we are going to remain in the classroom, a wild animal has entered into the School Building and it is not safe to enter, the principal will make an announcement when it is safe again.” Zukhai ran up to Ms. Collis and asked, “What kind of animal?”
What kind of wild animal do you predict entered into the school?
Principal Alban warned all the teachers to keep their doors closed and to continue on with their teaching until further notice. Thirty minutes later the animal rescue arrived at the school. “Hello, Principal Alban we are here to rescue the animal that is wandering around your beautiful school,” said the man holding a net and wearing long rubber gloves. “If you follow the smell I am certain you will find it. The skunk smell is stronger on the second floor of the school,” the principal explained. The animal rescue searched high and low all over the second floor. He looked in the library and he looked in the halls then all of a sudden he noticed a movement near the coat hangers …
Where do you predict the Skunk is hiding?
The worker walked over to a bright pink jacket, he picked up the coat but the skunk was not there. Beside the pink jacket he noticed a backpack unzipped, he looked inside and found a young skunk.
The End
Make a prediction about why the skunk was in somebody’s backpack?
